Inspiring the next generation of musicians
The new organ will also form the foundation of our Organ Academy, providing new educational opportunities and inspiring the next generation of musicians, ensuring that the organ is not just a privilege, but an instrument for all to explore, enjoy and master.
Sponsor a stop
Each organ stop represents a distinct voice in the instrument’s tonal palette. By becoming a sponsor, you’re helping to build something truly extraordinary, and your support will be formally recognised as part of the Cathedral’s musical legacy.
A stop can also be sponsored in memory of a loved one - a lasting tribute woven into the fabric of Gloucester Cathedral’s sound for generations to come.
All organ stop sponsors receive a personalised certificate in recognition of their support, their name engraved onto one of the pipes in the stop, along with an invitation to the Cathedral to hear their chosen stop at an exclusive ‘Voicing Evening’. All donors will also receive regular updates on the organ’s progress and the In Tune campaign.
Organ Stops available for sponsorship include:
Pedal Organ 32’ Contra Bass stop and Sub Bass stop combined - £7,500
These two stops are ingeniously combined in a single ‘polyphone’ pipe that delivers 24 deep pitches across two volumes. These massive tones, two octaves below piano pitch, give the organ its sonic depth and physical power, resonating through the Cathedral and stirring the soul.
Pedal Organ 16’ Sub Bass - £7,500
This soft, fluty Pedal stop sounds an octave below piano pitch and is most important when accompanying the choir during services, gently anchoring the organ’s quieter sounds. It is arguably the most frequently used stop in worship.
Swell 8’ Cor de Nuit - £5,000
This is the main ‘flute’ stop on the Swell department. It is a beautiful, hauntingly mellow sound, and plays at piano-pitch.
Swell 8’ Dulciane – £5,000
Light and refined in tone, the Dulciane is a softly voiced reed that brings clarity and gentle warmth to the Swell organ. Often used for quiet accompaniment and subtle colouring, it enhances reflective music with sensitivity and balance.
Great 4’ Principal - £2,500
This important stop sits on the Great manual - the organ’s most powerful division. A bright, string-toned member of the Diapason family, it sounds an octave above piano pitch and adds brightness to the Diapason chorus. It’s also the pipe to which the entire organ is tuned.
Solo 4’ Trompette - £2,500
This bright, confident reed stop has a clear, ringing tone. Expressive and direct, it adds brilliance and energy to the Solo organ, bringing clarity and lift to melodic lines and moments of joyful proclamation.
Nave 2’ Super Octave - £1,000
This important stop in the powerful new Nave section is a bright, high-pitched Diapason, sounding two octaves above piano pitch. It crowns the Diapason chorus and plays a vital role in leading hymn singing.
