Gloucester Historia

We are pleased to be able to offer freely online a parallel image and translation of the chronicle of our monastic history written by our monks around the 1390s.  This has been made possible through a placement from the University of Bristol, MA in Medieval Studies.  We are extremely grateful to the University and to Carol.  We hope that this will assist anyone wishing to study the medieval history of St Peter's Abbey, Gloucester.

Please note that as this is a historic text it may represent views that may be sensitive and may or may not be the historic opinions, ideas and beliefs of the monks at St Peter’s Abbey in Gloucester.  The Cathedral does not endorse the information in the document, likewise the opinions represented in this document do not represent Gloucester Cathedral.  While the document contains opinions that may be considered prejudiced, stereotyped or offensive, it should be remembered that the document is an important resource in the study of past cultures.  We take our responsibilities as a repository of such material seriously.

Click on the button below to read the parallel image and translation of the Historia. The web edition is best viewed on screen with two pages next to each other.  We hope you find it interesting and useful. We make this freely available for research and study, but reserve all publication rights.  If you wish to publish or reuse any part hereof, please contact us to discuss.

Living Archive

For over 5 years we have been collecting the living memories of those who have worked, volunteered, visited and worshipped at the Cathedral.  We are delighted to be able to share some of the stories and memories already submitted via a digital exhibition created as part of a student placement from the University of West of England MA curation studies: "Different Characters, Connected Memories".  We hope you enjoy seeing, hearing and reading a small selection of what we have received.

Different Characters, Connected Memories

If you would like to know more about the project and to share your memories with us, please contact our Archivist by calling 01452 229818 or fill in the form below.

We want to tell people about your stories but recognise that not everyone is comfortable to share their details.  You may remain anonymous and if so your stories may be shared but all names and identifying features will be withheld for 30 years.  Your details and your full story will only be seen by staff and our stories volunteers.
