Admiral Henry Christian

Admiral Christian was Gloucestershire’s second Chief Constable and had served in the Royal Navy from 1841-1863.

Why he is included in this work

Admiral Christian was Gloucestershire’s second Chief Constable and had served in the Royal Navy from 1841-1863. In 1865 he became Chief Constable and served the Constabulary until 1910. A claim has been made that in 1864 he was involved in blockade running to the Southern States of America. The claim was included in the City Review of Heritage Assets with Links to Transatlantic Slavery

What we know

If the claim is true, he would have been supporting the Southern States in their battle to continue using enslaved labour. However, when we looked into this claim further we discovered that the only source cited for this claim (a memoir by Admiral August Charles Hobart-Hampden) does not give any of the blockade runners’ real names. It is not clear why this story has been linked to Admiral Christian, but at present we can find no definitive evidence that he was involved in the trade.

What we would still like to find out

We would still like to know more about why this claim was made about Admiral Christian and whether there is any substance to it.
