Light and Song: An English Song Recital

Saturday 7 March, 2pm - 3pm

‘Light and Song’ - A Recital of English Song Featuring James Gilchrist (tenor) and Ashok Gupta (piano).

Songs by Gustav and Imogen Holst, Benjamin Britten, John Dowland, Ralph Vaughan Williams, Madeleine Dring, Rebecca Clarke, Muriel Herbert and Dilys Elwyn-Edward, performed by one of the finest interpreters of English song today, tenor James Gilchrist, with pianist Ashok Gupta.

Hosted by The Holst Society, 'Light and Song' is a glorious kaleidoscopic vision exploring familiar songs and lesser-known gems by British composers; a highlight is Benjamin Britten's Canticle 1 'My beloved is Mine', which sets the metaphysical poet Francis Quarles as he meditates on divine love. Surrounding this masterpiece are works of John Dowland, Ralph Vaughan Williams, Gustav and Imogen Holst, Rebecca Clarke, Madeleine Dring, Muriel Herbert, and Dilys Elwyn-Edwards.

Tickets can be booked online or ordered in advance to collect on the day: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/an-english-song-recital-featuring-british-tenor-james-gilchrist-tickets-1981434963314

Tickets can also be requested from The Holst Society, contact: chairman@holstsociety.org

Later in the afternoon, Choral Evensong takes place in the Cathedral from 4.30pm and features the young voices of St Benedict’s Singers. The programme includes Gustav Holst's ‘The Day of the Lord’ in an arrangement for lower voices. All are welcome.
