FOGC Study Day: Gloucester Cathedral's Stained Glass

Saturday 6 September, 11am

We are fortunate in having a group amongst the Cathedral Guides who specialise in the Cathedral's glass.

This event will offer a morning appreciation of the medieval Great East Window followed by a selection of the works by Victorian artists in the Nave and Cloisters including William Wailes, John Hardman and Clayton & Bell. After lunch we will begin with the works of Charles Kempe and Tom Denny, then moving on to the glories of the Lady Chapel with Christopher and Veronica Whall, the medieval glass in the East window, more Denny and the charm of the musicians' chapel. The day promises to be really interesting with much to enjoy.

To best appreciate the stained glass, the study sessions will take place in the Cathedral, so that the works can be appreciated up close and in situ. We will endeavour to provide some seating, but attendees need to be comfortable standing and walking for extended periods.

The ticket price includes two study sessions, a soup and sandwich lunch, and tea after the afternoon session. Attendees need to be comfortable standing and walking around the Cathedral, as the day will not take the form of sit-down presentations.

Online booking closes on Tuesday 2 September.

NB: The study day is initially only open to FOGC members and their guests, if we have capacity booking will be opened to the general public later in the summer. If you are not already a member of the Friends of Gloucester Cathedral, and would like to join, an application form can be found on our website: https://gloucestercathedral.org.uk/support/friends/join
