Cheltenham Music Festival: Berlioz: Te Deum

Saturday 5 July, 7.30 pm

Berlioz’s monumental Te Deum was written to fill a gigantic building, possibly Notre-Dame in Paris, for a spectacular ceremony of international proportions. This concert is a rare chance to experience the last of the composer’s great ‘architectural’ works in the suitably grand setting of Gloucester Cathedral. Two outstanding 19th-century works complete the programme: Brahms’ deeply romantic Alto Rhapsody will be brought to life by Dame Sarah Connelly and Faure’s mass for women’s voices, described by the composer as his ‘little holiday mass’. Expect this concert to begin with a summery, folk-ish welcome.
