Gloucester Cathedral Relaunches Music Patron Scheme

Gloucester Cathedral Relaunches Music Patron Scheme

Support a journey of first-rate musical education and lifelong learning, and become part of centuries of tradition

Music has been at the heart of Gloucester Cathedral for centuries. It has the ability to transform lives and bring people together through worship, lifelong musical learning and by providing the opportunity for all to enjoy singing through our community engagement and outreach work. Music is for everyone and we want to ensure it can thrive through our Music Patron Scheme.

We continue to provide world-class musical education through our choirs, which help develop the talent of those aged between six and 18.  Recently the Junior Choir doubled in size for girls and boys of any singing ability.

This year, we are delighted that both our girl and boy choristers will benefit from scholarships at The King's School, providing them with an exceptional education and the perfect environment to develop their musical talent. Boys have benefitted from scholarships for 50 years and we are now proud to achieve parity for all our talented choristers. This requires additional support for all.

Dame Sarah Connolly, President of Music at Gloucester Cathedral and Patron of the Girl Choristers, said:

“I am thrilled to be the first President of Music at Gloucester Cathedral, and Patron of the Girl Choristers. It has never been more important to ensure that musical opportunities are offered to girls and boys of all backgrounds, and the work done at Gloucester Cathedral continues to produce a generation of youngsters who take a love of music forward into their lives.”

Music is the largest and integral part of Gloucester Cathedral’s life. As a charity, we receive no government aid, and for a minimum of just £15 per month individuals can help to meet some of the expenses of this vital activity.  All Music Patrons will enjoy a range of exclusive benefits as a result of their donation, such as invitations to private events and regular updates from the Cathedral. A current Music Patron said of the scheme:

“A way to support the musical life of the Cathedral which is, in my view, an essential component of its mission and ministry. I wanted to help ensure it could continue to thrive and develop.”
