'Build' at the Heritage Hub

Celebrate architecture of the past and present at the Heritage Hub on 1 October, where the Cathedral's very own Master Mason, Pascal, will be giving a talk

On Saturday 1 October, the Heritage Hub has an exciting event entitled ‘Build’ which aims to celebrate architecture of the past, present and future.  This is a fantastic opportunity to see some of the beautiful architectural plans held within the archive collections at Gloucestershire Archives.

There are two talks to enjoy. Joe Roberts, director of Roberts Limbrick will be discussing ‘Bringing historic buildings into modern use with a focus on Gloucester's Carriage Building’ at 2pm and Gloucester Cathedral’s leading stonemason, Pascal Mychalysin will be sharing his thoughts on ‘Cathedral Workshops and Apprenticeship: Securing Heritage Skills for the Future’ at 2.30pm. You will also be able to discover the work of the Gloucestershire Building Recording Group.

Archive staff are currently busy preparing a slideshow of international architectural images for the event.  These slides have been taken from the vast collection of the late R W Paterson, leading architect of Gloucester and Cheltenham.  They have not been seen in public for many years and document his love and interest of architecture around the world.  They are a fitting acknowledgement to the fact that the month of October contains ‘World Architecture Day’.

You can also take a ‘behind the scenes’ tour of the Heritage Hub building and have a glimpse at the new and old style of archive strongrooms, hidden treasures, community garden and on-site artwork.

Finally, have you ever wondered who lived in your home before you? If so, prior to and during this event you can learn about some of the sources available with volunteers of Gloucestershire Family History Society.  They will be onsite from 10am.  All other events start at 1pm and run through until 4pm.

We look forward to seeing you.  Everyone is welcome. You can turn up on the day but to avoid disappointment, we recommend that you make a booking via our website at www.heritagehub.org.uk.  The Heritage Hub is situated on Clarence Row, just off Alvin Street, Gloucester GL1 3DW.
