Jubilee Ploughman's

Thursday 2 June - Sunday 5 June

Don't miss the opportunity to sample the Jubilee Ploughman's at The Monk's Kitchen, which will feature a unique pie with a royal tradition that goes back centuries.

Since the medieval times, it has been customary for the city of Gloucester to send the monarch a Lamprey Pie, ornately decorated with gilded ornaments. Lampreys were considered to be a high status food, and these eel-like fish were prevalent in English rivers, including the River Severn. The Lamprey Pie was traditionally given every Christmas, but this was stopped in 1836 when it became too expensive; however, the pie is still presented by Gloucester to the monarch on special occasions, including the Coronation in 1953.

To coincide with The Platinum Jubilee, this famous pie is being given a new lease of life by the multi-award winning pie chefs at The Farmers Boy Inn at Longhope, home to Mad About Pies gourmet pie business. It is now almost impossible to source Lampreys from the UK, so the pie will use a historic Gloucestershire recipe based on Old Spot pork and apple. The Lampreys haven't been forgotten, though, and will be represented in pastry on the crust of the pie.

You can sample it here at The Monk's Kitchen, where it will form part of the Jubilee Ploughman's - it will only be available across the Jubilee weekend, so don't miss the chance to taste this unique part of our history.

The Jubilee Ploughman's will be a sharing plate for 2, and it will include:

  • Gloucester Jubilee Old Spot pie

  • Salads

  • Chutneys

  • Coleslaw

  • Cheddar

  • Stilton

This will cost £19.50.
