Visiting for research

Researchers are welcome but must make an appointment in advance with the Cathedral Archivist and be able to identify what individual items parts of the collection they need to consult.  On arrival they will be asked for evidence of identity and address and asked to sign the visitors book, agreeing to abide by the research regulations.

No food or drink is allowed in the library and all books or manuscripts must be handled and supported in accordance with the Archivist’s instructions. No pens are allowed but either pencils or laptops may be used to take notes. Photography (not flash) for private research purposes only may be permitted at the discretion of the Archivist. The Library will close for an hour at lunchtime.

If you have any special requirements (including photography),  please discuss these when you make an appointment.

Finding aids

We are in the process of cataloguing the bulk of the archival collection and lists or catalogues will be made available in the Library and via the Gloucestershire Archives online catalogue which you can access via the link below.  The Chapter Acts and Treasurers accounts are now available, and more is being added every week.

The Archivist will be able to advise on uncatalogued parts of the collection and in some cases can draw on cataloguing work still in progress.
