The Library is only open to researchers and volunteers by appointment at present.

Researchers are welcome but must make an appointment in advance with the Cathedral Archivist and be able to identify what individual items parts of the collection they need to consult.  On arrival they will be asked for evidence of identity and address and asked to sign the visitors book, agreeing to abide by the research regulations.

No food or drink is allowed in the library and all books or manuscripts must be handled and supported in accordance with the Archivist’s instructions. No pens are allowed but either pencils or laptops may be used to take notes. Photography (not flash) for private research purposes only may be permitted at the discretion of the Archivist. The Library will close for a short period at lunchtime.

We are presently in the process of cataloguing the bulk of the archival collection and lists or catalogues will be made available in the Library and via the Gloucestershire Archives online catalogue.  The Chapter Acts and Treasurers accounts are now available.

The Archivist will be able to advise on uncatalogued parts of the collection and in some cases can draw on cataloguing work still in progress.

Printed catalogues

The Library

A catalogue of the Library (printed works and manuscripts) was published in 1972:

  • Suzanne Mary Eward: A Catalogue of Gloucester Cathedral Library (Gloucester 1972)

Copies of this book, which contains the history of the Library, can be bought from the Library for £5, (plus p&p). A draft digitised version of this catalogue was created and is hosted by Dr Ray Wilson.  Please note that titles in Hebrew or Greek have not been successfully converted.  Details of post-1972 acquisitions are held in the Library itself and can be consulted by the Archivist on request.

The Archives

A catalogue of the Archives was published in 1967:

  • Isabel M Kirby: Diocese of Gloucester. A Catalogue of the Records of the Dean and Chapter including the Former St Peter’s Abbey (Gloucester, 1967).
