The Diocese of Gloucester supports nearly 400 places of worship, of which more than 90% are listed buildings. We are currently seeking to appoint a Church Buildings Officer and Assistant DAC Secretary to support the work of our Care of Churches and DAC Team and the Diocesan Advisory Committee (DAC). This is a key role within a small but dedicated team, committed to a sustainable future for historic church buildings across the diocese. Independent judgement, critical thinking and excellent communication are the key skills we will be looking for in the right candidate.
The post holder will be part of a small team that manages a complex and varied workload. They will be a key point of contact for parishes, providing timely advice and guidance in matters concerning the care and development of church buildings and churchyards, including reviewing church buildings faculty and List B casework. As Assistant DAC Secretary, the post holder will also be responsible for the day-to-day management of the Diocesan Advisory Committee and its operations under the guidance of the Care of Churches and DAC Team Leader.
The post will support the provision of training and guidance for parishes in all aspects of managing their churches through a variety of media and will help to support and further develop effective systems for the management, conservation and adaptation of churches across the Diocese.
This post will suit somebody with considerable experience in the conservation and management of historic buildings and relevant casework, preferably within an ecclesiastical context. You will need to be able to balance a busy workload, have a keen interest in church buildings and their value within local communities, and be highly professional, practical and pragmatic in outlook.
