Middle Choir

Middle Choir

Talented young singers

The Cathedral Middle Choir was formed in September 2019. The choir is an intermediate step between the Junior Choir and Youth Choir, with the aim of further developing the musicianship of young people. Young people can join the Middle Choir from school year 6 and will leave at the end of school year 9 (when they will be encouraged to progress into the Cathedral Youth Choir).

The choir’s main duty is leading the singing in the Family Eucharist on the second Sunday of each month, on the weekends when the boy choristers are in residence. In addition, there are a range of extra services and events throughout the cathedral year which the choir performs at independently. The choir regularly joins with the Youth Choir for services and evensongs, helping to ease the transition between the choirs. The choir also often combines with the choristers and Youth Choir for major cathedral concerts, one recent highlight being a performance of Mahler’s Symphony no. 8 with the British Sinfonietta as part of the Cheltenham Music Festival.

Rehearsals are on Saturday morning during term-time, 11.00am - 12.00noon, in the Cathedral Song School (in the North Transept near the Treasury).

How do I join the Cathedral Middle Choir?

We are always keen to welcome potential new members. If you would like to learn more about the choir, please contact choirs@gloucestercathedral.org.uk .

We really look forward to hearing from you!

Will there be an audition?

The choir is non auditioned, but each child will have an informal meeting with the choir director (normally just after their first rehearsal) in order to check vocal range/prior experience etc.
