Junior Choir

The Future of Cathedral Music

Gloucester Cathedral Junior Choir was re-established in 2014.  The children, in school years 2-5, enjoy their weekly singing rehearsal as well as performing in concerts and services.   The choir currently consists of around 50 members, who represent at least 20 schools in the diocese.

The choir form an integral part of the Cathedral’s worship on the 2nd Sunday of every month, and are a vital part of the Cathedral’s Vision and Strategy which encourages everyone to come and use this beautiful building.  Singing in the Cathedral, with its wonderful acoustic, is an experience which remains with a child throughout his/her life.

The Choir regularly sing elsewhere in the county, and further afield.  Recent engagements have included singing at Bishop Rachel’s inauguration, singing in Orff’s Carmina Burana at the 2017 Gloucester Three Choir’s Festival alongside the Philharmonia Orchestra, and performing with the choristers, the BBC National Chorus of Wales and BBC Philharmonic Orchestra at Bridgewater Hall, in a performance of Mahler’s Second Symphony.  The choir regularly go on mini tours to perform at other venues.  These have included the Cathedral Churches of Brecon and Worcester, and Malmesbury Abbey.

The Junior Choir have enjoyed performed works especially written for them, including a Jubilate by Ian King, and a brand new sung-through Nativity Musical.

How to join the Junior Choir

We are always keen to welcome new members. If your child may be interested in joining, please contact our Singing Development Leader, Nia Llewelyn Jones:

Weekly rehearsals

We rehearse each Saturday morning during term from 0915-1030 in the Cathedral’s beautifully refurbished Lady Chapel.

Will there be an audition?

There is no formal audition process, but we strive to achieve high musical standards and constantly try to develop and improve.  Each new member will undertake a friendly and informal musical assessment within their first month to help encourage their singing.

Do we need to pay to join?

The Junior Choir is free to join.  In line with many after school clubs e.g. Scouts, Brownies, sports clubs we do charge for Junior Choir uniforms.  Uniforms cost £20 (or £10 for a polo shirt; £10 for a sweatshirt).

If there is financial hardship, then please do not hesitate to come and talk to us.  We are determined not to charge for membership or things like trips.

Director: Nia Llewelyn Jones, Singing Development Leader

Accompanist: Mary Tan, Organ Scholar
