Finding your voice: How singing at Gloucester Cathedral can change a young person's life
Singing is about much more than simply raising your voice. Joining a choir can give young people a place to belong, the confidence to perform in front of others, the opportunity to challenge themselves and to discover skills they may not have known they had.
During my time at the Cathedral, I’ve had the privilege of witnessing over 3,500 young people discover their voices and so much more through our choirs and choral projects.
I’m delighted to have the opportunity to continue to see the remarkable difference that singing together can make to lives of young people.
I’m really looking forward to meeting the new voices who will join our Trinity Singers (school years 9-13) and St Benedict’s Singers (school years 4-9) choirs this autumn.
Whether you’re an experienced singer or simply love to sing, I’d encourage you to find out more about auditioning and the exciting opportunities that await.
Space to grow as a singer and a person
Singing and choral music were at the heart of my childhood, and I know first-hand how valuable joining a choir can be in helping young people build confidence, form lasting friendships, and experience a genuine sense of belonging.
It’s therefore a real privilege to see the difference that our choirs and singing projects can make to the lives of young people. Through our musical programmes, we welcome singers from all backgrounds to discover their gifts and flourish.
For some, singing in a choir can become the first place where they truly find their community. For others, it's where they learn to listen, cooperate and work together as part of something bigger than themselves.
Some discover resilience as they rise to new challenges, while others find a confidence they never knew they had as they stand up and perform in front of hundreds of people, sometimes at major services attended by members of the Royal Family.
And alongside these wonderful opportunities, they're making friendships, creating memories and, quite simply, having an enormous amount of fun.
Being part of the musical life of our Cathedral provides young people with opportunities to grow not only as musicians, but as individuals.
Whether joining one of our choirs, or participating in one of our Singing Academy projects, our young singers have the opportunity to develop confidence, character and a sense of belonging, discovering that their potential extends far beyond their expectations.
Could your child or loved one join one of our choirs this Autumn?
We’re currently inviting young people from across our community to be part of the next chapter of music-making at Gloucester Cathedral by joining our Trinity Singers (school years 9-13) or St Benedict’s Singers (school years 4-9).
With expert musical training from our musicians, regular rehearsals and exciting opportunities to perform, our singers develop their voices, confidence and musicianship while experiencing the joy of making music together.
It’s a unique and valuable experience, and one that can open doors to opportunities they may never have imagined.
Our singers often don’t know exactly where singing might take them when they first join. They may arrive with little more than a spark of enthusiasm for music, but that spark can grow into something remarkable, leading to fantastic, unique and unexpected opportunities.
If you think your child or someone you care for might thrive as part of our singing community, I’d encourage you to find out more. It could be the beginning of something truly transformative - not only for your child, but for your whole family.
Recruitment closes on 2 September for Autumn start.
