Friday 4 April, 5.30pm
All are warmly welcome to attend this special Choral Evensong that will mark the 275th anniversary of composer John Stafford Smith. Stafford-Smith was a Gloucester-born composer who wrote, among many things, the American National Anthem.
Smith’s remarkable story began in Gloucester Cathedral, where he was baptised and sang as a chorister under his organist father’s guidance. A plaque commemorating him is situated in the North Aisle, below the American flag.
The music at this special service of Choral Evensong will include works from American composers.
Adrian Partington, Director of Music at Gloucester Cathedral said:
“We are looking forward to marking John Stafford Smith’s 275th anniversary with a special US themed Choral Evensong on 4 April.
From choirboy at Gloucester Cathedral to composer of one of the most recognisable tunes in the world, Stafford Smith’s story is remarkable. This special occasion will celebrate the rich heritage of Gloucester Cathedral music and will feature anthems from the other side of the Atlantic. You would be very welcome to attend."
