Gloucester Morris Men and Mummers Dance

Thursday 26 December, 12noon

It’s become one of the features of the season, and we look forward to it every year... join The Gloucestershire Morris and England's Glory Lady Morris on Cathedral Green on Boxing Day to see this traditional, fun-filled dance and play.

The origins of the mummers plays go back hundreds of years, all across the region and the country. But we must be grateful to a dedicated group of Gloucestershire folk music and folklore enthusiasts, mainly members of the Gloucester Folk Club, who decided to resurrect the ‘Gloucester Mummers Play’ back in the winter of 1969.

Before this revival, the play had not been performed for many years in Gloucester. Thankfully, in 1931 a Mr Todd had ‘collected’ the play from one of the old performers, 64 year old George Blick, and so (although it hadn’t been performed) it was preserved for us to enjoy to this day.

Join us for this free entertaining event out in the fresh air this Boxing Day. No booking required, and all are welcome.
