Join local lettering mason Isobel Harper in this one day workshop set in the medieval surroundings of our Learning & Participation Hub.
Isobel comes from a long-line of monumental masons, and Gloucester Cathedral is home to numerous monuments, carved by her grandfather Bryant Fedden.
In this workshop you will use the same stone used by the Cathedral masons themselves; carving a design of your choosing to take home with you. Create a house name or number, carve your initials, or even a saying of your choice. You will learn all the skills you need to make a unique piece, whilst rekindling a dwindling heritage skill.
Experience level: No previous experience necessary.
Program of study:
- Health and safety introduction
- About the stone
- Learning to use the tools
- Transfer using carbon paper onto the stone
- Carving out lettering
- Finishing
- Enameling
Each participant will be provided with stone, tools & PPE.
From 10th July - 26th September Gloucester Cathedral will be showcasing heritage skills and art work produced by the community. By taking part in this workshop, you will be offered the opportunity for your work to be featured in the exhibition.
Over 18s only.
Please wear suitable footwear.
There will be a lunch break - please bring a packed lunch with you.
This workshop takes place in our Learning & Participation Hub, the classroom space is up two flights of stairs. Unfortunately, due to the historic nature of the building we are unable to provide level access to the workshop space.
