Monasticism and the Dissolution

This trail considers the way in which the Benedictine monks at St Peter's Abbey lived a life of work, study and prayer; the structures of authority and labour in the monastery and its social and political influence in the wider community.

What effects did the Dissolution have in Gloucester and further afield? How were the local economy and society affected? Groups will have the opportunity to explore these issues and to understand, by observation and analysis, the life of a monastery on the eve of the Dissolution.

For year 7 there is an opportunity for experiential learning through role-play and follow up activities. Please contact the Education Team for more details.
