A Revolution in Stone

Monday 6 and Wednesday 8 September 2pm - 3.30pm

Gloucester Cathedral’s medieval fan-vaulted cloister is famous all over the world. Harry Potter is partly to thank for that, but did you know that this style of architecture, used in so many well known buildings since, was invented right here in Gloucester? This guided tour showcases the Cathedral’s pioneering architecture which includes the world’s oldest surviving example of the Perpendicular style and explores how this was developed further in the wonderful Quire with its high, elegant walls and Great East stained glass window. The size of a tennis court, this was the largest window on the planet when it was built. The tour will also take you behind the scenes to the fascinating roof space above the South Transept ceiling which allows you to see how the vault was constructed.

Please note: Parts of this event do not include level access

Tuesday 7 September 11am - 12.30pm

Join knowledgeable Cathedral Guides to discover what life would have been like for the Benedictine monks of St Peter’s Abbey (now Gloucester Cathedral) around the time when this masterpiece of medieval metal work – the Gloucester Candlestick – was made in the early 1100s. The commissioning of this precious object by Abbot Peter occurred during a critical phase in the development of St Peter’s Abbey and this talk will draw upon evidence from a number of sources to explore daily life here in the 12th century. The guided tour that follows will showcase the original areas and features of the building, such as the Crypt and Chapter House, that would have been familiar to the monks of the time.

Please note: Parts of this event do not include level access.

Breakfast Club

Thursday and Sunday mornings 7.30am

Supporting the homeless and vulnerable is core to our values, our vision and mission and is realised through our Social Responsibility work. The challenges of Covid-19 and resulting restrictions have required different ways of working to help us build on our existing successes, but not without times of frustration and sadness that we can’t do more.

We are delighted that our Breakfast Club provision continues to run every Thursday and Sunday morning.  The dedicated volunteer team provide hot drinks and food indoors at No.7 College Green, including porridge, cereal, a bacon roll and from 12 December, a full cooked breakfast will be on offer.

  • Breakfast Club runs on Thursday and Sunday at 7.30am-8.30am

  • We ask guests to wear face masks whenever possible and observe social distancing.

Our partners Gloucester City Mission also provides a hot meal and outreach services for those in need.  Visit their website www.gloscitymission.org.uk for more information.
