13:00Taborers Society Informal ConcertThe Wonders of the Pipe and Tabor Members of the Taborers Society will give a short concert featuring the pipe and tabor, playing a range of music from the mediaeval and Tudor periods. This will include an ancient carol from ca. 1280 composed in Gloucester at Llanthony Secunda Priory “Edi beo thu, hevene quene” The pipe and tabor are two instruments played simultaneously by one musician {called a taborer}. This is possible because the pipe only has three finger holes, so can be played with one hand while the other hand beats the rhythm on a drum called a tabor. This combination has been around for centuries. A swan-bone three-hole pipe has been found at Avebury, dating from 2000BC, and Gloucester cathedral has two carvings of taborers dating from ca 1350 – one high up in the roof with other minstrel carvings and another very fine statue above a sedilla in the presbytery. Admission free www.pipeandtabor.org
