Who's Who in the Friends

We are currently seeking additional Trustees. If you are interested in standing as a candidate for any of the following roles: Trustee, Honorary Secretary, Chair, please complete a nomination form, and return it to the Friends Office. All candidates have to be members of the Friends and be nominated and seconded by a Friend. Nominations must be received by the Honorary Secretary no later than 15 April to enable details of candidates for election to be included in the Annual Report with the notice of AGM

Margaret Austen is a qualified solicitor who has specialised in company, commercial and charity law, as well as being managing partner of Willans Solicitors. She has been a trustee and/or honorary adviser to a number of local charities and is a Deputy Lieutenant of Gloucestershire.

Rob Ingram was a teacher and schoolmaster for 35 years. He currently serves on Council as a member of the Events Committee and as Acting Honorary Secretary. He and his wife are regular members of the Cathedral congregation, and he is a volunteer in the Breakfast Club.

Tim Watkins is Managing Partner of Randall & Payne, a firm of Accountants in Cheltenham. He is an ex-officio member and Trustee and Honorary Treasurer of the Council.

Professor Clair Chilvers was a cancer researcher for most of her career and latterly held senior positions in the Department of Health and NHS. She has been Vice Chair of the Friends’ Council for the past three years and Chair of the Events Committee since its inception.

The Lord Vestey GCVO was Chairman of the Vestey family business and lives in Gloucestershire. He has been president and patron of many organisations, both local and national.

Susan Faircloth has worked internationally in editorial and management roles in academic publishing for many years. She is responsible for the Friends' publications.

Carolyn, Lady Elwes has worked for many years in the charity sector and in a non-executive role in the NHS.

Catherine Girdler has been a member of the Friends of Gloucester Cathedral for over 40 years.  For 37 years she was Secretary/PA to a local veterinary surgeon.  She joined the Events Committee before becoming a member of Council.  She also serves as Minutes Secretary to Council.

The Very Reverend Stephen Lake, Dean of Gloucester since 2011, has overall responsibility for the Cathedral as Chair of the Chapter. Stephen is also chair of the Project Pilgrim Board, Gloucester Regeneration Advisory Board and the County Scout Executive. He is a Church Commissioner and a member of the National Safeguarding Steering Group.

Emily MacKenzie is Chapter Steward, and Chief Operating Officer of Gloucester Cathedral. She is a member of Gloucester Cathedral Chapter, and also an honorary lay canon of the Cathedral. She is invited to attend meetings of Council.

Reverend Canon Richard Mitchell, Canon Precentor and Director of Congregational Development, a position he has held since 2016, is a member of Gloucester Cathedral Chapter. He is also a member of General Synod. He is an ex-officio member and Trustee of Council.

Felicity Read is Managing Director of Leapfrog PR, guest lectures at the University of Gloucestershire and lectures on strategic communications each year at URL in Barcelona.  Felicity works with development charity Friends of Ibba Girls School (South Sudan), has three (almost grown-up) children, and is a very keen runner.

Office Administrator

Claire manages the day to day running of the Friends of Gloucester Cathedral.  She can usually be found in the Friends Office on Tuesday and Thursday mornings. Claire is also a regular member of the Cathedral Congregation.
