Lecture: Sir William Compton SOLD OUT

Lecture: Sir William Compton, early Tudor courtier and probable donor of the Lady Chapel East Window at Gloucester Cathedral

Thursday 27 May 2021 - 7.00pm
Lady Chapel, Gloucester Cathedral

A Lecture by Sally Annesley

Gloucester Cathedral is well known for its stained glass, but who paid for the medieval windows? In the Lady Chapel there are some clues; on the large east window, the rebus, or play on words, of the name ‘Compton’ indicates the name of the probable donor.

Cathedral guide Sally Annesley makes a case that the most likely donor was William Compton (1482–1528). He was in the court of the young Henry VIII and one of the richest men in the country. Join Sally to learn about his meteoric rise and connections with Gloucester.
