Swapping the Abbot for a Dean: the creation of Gloucester Cathedral with a brief glimpse at what happened at Worcester and Hereford in the early reformation

What were cathedrals like at the end of the medieval period? How many were there and how were they organized? Why did Henry VIII choose to create six new dioceses and cathedrals, including Gloucester, in the 1540s? This illustrated talk addresses the effects of the Reformation on Gloucester Abbey contrasting it with the cathedrals of Worcester and Hereford.

Dr Fisher teaches medieval art history in Bristol. His PhD thesis examined Gloucester Abbey and the cathedrals of Hereford and Worcester in the sixteenth century.
