From Your Cathedral To You

Sharing Comfort and Joy with all this Christmas

This year, our From Your Cathedral To You Christmas campaign aims to give people across the city, county and diocese a positive memory after a difficult year, bringing the community safely together in joyful and spiritual celebration - either in person or online – so that everyone can enjoy the things that make Christmas - albeit slightly differently this year.

Please be sure to check our daily calendar for opening times before travelling.

We are open to visitors

The Cathedral will be open for visitors to come and enjoy a heart-warming Christmas experience. Each visiting group will receive a beautifully illustrated Christmas Card along with information about our online services, a prayer, and a tealight candle to take home which you could light while you join us online at one of our carol services. Carols will be played or sung during opening hours which will also include some evenings.

Digital Advent Calendar #FromYourCathedralToYou

A daily video will be shared across social media channels and our website, showcasing some of the many people who make Gloucester Cathedral the beacon of hope that it is. Each video offers a festive activity for you to take part in, which we hope will bring you a little bit of ‘Comfort and Joy’.

Christmas Craft Activities

Our new Christmas Craft Activities resource will provide ten easy and accessible craft activities that bring the important Christmas story to life and will add to our community resources. We are hosting the Gloucestershire Sanctuary Fellowship Christmas Tree for the Homeless, utilising the Cathedrals Digital advent calendar ‘make a decoration activity’ to further encourage the public to make decorations for the tree this year.

Christmas Trail and Cathedral Christmas Selfies

From Saturday 5 December to Friday 25 December inclusive, come and follow our Christmas Family Trail around the Cathedral, learn about the Christmas story and meet the characters by finding the miniature displays. Finish the trail with a walk through the festive scaffold tunnel in the north transept to reach the much loved, life sized knitted Knitivity, now with it's very own stable. Carols will be played or sung during opening hours which will also include some evenings. (Evenings will be ticketed and pre-bookable).

The Cathedral will be decorated with special festive flower arrangements and lights so gather your family bubble together and get the best ever selfie this Christmas. Remember to share it with us on social media, just tag us - we can't wait to see them.

Homeless Hamper Campaign

We are working with Gloucester City Mission to be the main collection point for their Homeless Hamper campaign. Between Friday 4 and Friday 11 December visitors can drop off donations such as mince pies, chocolate, pot noodles, tea, toiletries, hats, gloves and scarves to a collection point in the Cathedral Nave. The hampers will be distributed during breakfast club on Sunday 20 December.

Beacon of Hope Hurricane Lanterns

As part of Gloucester Cathedral's Beacon of Hope Appeal, we are delighted to offer you the chance to purchase a limited edition hurricane lantern, which has been illustrated by Cheltenham-based calligrapher, Emma Barnes. There are just 250 lanterns available, with a unique number on each. It will be yours to treasure forever as a monument from this remarkable period of history, serving as your very own beacon of hope to have inside your home. Click here to find out more.

Look up!

For the first time in the Cathedral’s history, and for this special Christmas period only, the spectacular carved stone ceiling in the Quire will be illuminated with electric lighting. One of the Cathedral’s crowning glories, this was built as an image of Heaven on earth. Jesus Christ is depicted looking down on us from above the High Altar. He is shown as the King of Heaven, surrounded by angels carrying instruments and playing heavenly music. Other angels carry symbols of his crucifixion. This is where you will find the Knitivity this year.

From Your Cathedral To You

Loving God,
you have come among us as the Holy Child of Bethlehem:
may the light of faith illumine our hearts
and shine in our words and deeds;
through the one who is Christ our Lord.
Amen

We wish you a Happy Christmas and a Peaceful New Year

We would like to thank Katie B Morgan who produced the beautiful illustrations to accompany our
