Why does Easter matter to Christians?

Using a trail, the children will have the opportunity to hear about the events of the first holy week. They will hear about the special Easter services and events that happen at the Cathedral and explore some of the ideas and beliefs linked to Easter through creative activities.

Activities include creating an Easter Card, making a book about the Easter Story and making a clay candleholder.

Why does Christmas matter to Christians?

Based on the suggestions from the Gloucestershire Agreed Syllabus, this visit will take you on a trail around the Cathedral exploring the nativity story from the Gospel of Luke in different stations. There will also be an opportunity to find out about Advent traditions in the Cathedral as well as related craft activities.

What makes some places special to believers?

Following a trail around the Cathedral we will identify and explain different key features of the Cathedral that are used in Worship. We discuss how people pray and the different colours that are used throughout the year. We listen to a selection of music that is important to different members of the Cathedral community. Using the stained glass windows, we listen to stories from the Bible.

Activities include creating a clay candle holder, using glass beads to design a stained glass window and matching photos to the correct label.

Mosque and Cathedral

All dates for Mosque and Cathedral days for this academic year are currently fully booked. However, there are plenty of dates available for Autumn Term onwards.

Spend the morning at the Masjid E-Noor and then head to the Cathedral for lunch and afternoon activities.

At the Mosque you will have an introduction to Islam, a guided tour of the Mosque and activities. At the Cathedral you will have a multi-sensory tour of the Cathedral as a place of worship.

The Cathedral Education Department will coordinate and book both venues.

Values

As we tour the Cathedral we discuss the values of; Tolerance, Mutual respect between those of different faiths and beliefs, Democracy, The rule of law and Individual Liberty.

Stories from the Bible, different features of the Cathedral and local Historical Characters are used to look at the importance of these Values and how they have changed or stayed the same through the passing of time.

Belonging

During the Cathedral tour, we will explore what it means to belong to something. We will role-play an infant baptism at the font. We will briefly discuss the monks who lived at the Abbey and the ‘family’ that they belonged to.

Activities include decorating prayed stones, creating clay candle holders and designing a stained glass window.

Kings & Things

Find out about the ‘the prince who was never king’, the boy king who didn’t have a crown and the king who’s buried here. An interactive and interesting trail involving storytelling, role-play and dressing-up.  A wonderful introduction to the history of this significant building in the city.

Glorious Gloucester

Through a tour of the building, discover its history and significance in the city.

Find out about the monks who lived here over 900 hundred years ago, the games they played and how they lived. Then explore the characters throughout history who have had an influence in the city.

Wellbeing and Mindfulness 

As you tour the Cathedral, discuss different wellbeing and Mindfulness methods that can help to calm us down and manage our emotions.  

We will take part in a guided meditation, try some mindful creating, make calming jars, design powerful petals and take part in some mindful breathing exercises.
