Exhibition: Work of Heart Garden
29th August 2018
Work of Heart Garden

Wednesday 1 August - Wednesday 29 August

South Transept

The first ever full-sized knitted show garden installation for the RHS will be on display at Gloucester Cathedral following its debut at RHS Malvern Spring Festival in May this year.

The Work of Heart Garden is a labour of love, created by Clare Young. After Clare’s husband Ken was cared for in his final weeks of life at Sue Ryder’s Leckhampton Court Hospice, Gloucestershire, she wanted to say thank you by raising funds and awareness for the charity. Clare had started knitting again after her psychologist suggested it could help ease the anxiety and PTSD she’d been diagnosed with after Ken’s death, and so she began knitting items to sell for the hospice, then yarn bombed a tree in the grounds as a creative way of thanking volunteers and staff. Clare was helped in the garden’s creation by her team of knitting friends, The Chief Knits, and also worked with local knitting and community groups

“I’ve been very clear from the start that I wanted to recreate the calm and tranquillity that I felt at the hospice through my garden,” explains Clare. “It’s a hospice bedroom, but a garden, so we have grass on the floor – all knitted obviously – with wallpaper on the walls.”

Admission is free - open daily
