Lady Chapel

The Lady Chapel

Identified as the most ‘at risk’ area of the Cathedral, we will be undertaking major conservation and restoration work in the stunning 15th century Lady Chapel.

The internal work will:

  • ensure the Lady Chapel is fully accessible by removing the pillar obstructing the entrance and levelling the floor
  • install a new lintel carved by our team of Stonemasons
  • make the space warmer and more comfortable by installing underfloor heating and new radiators
  • provide a new lighting scheme
  • a thorough clean of all the stonework
  • a thorough clean of the stained glass windows
  • make good any damage caused to the fabric of the building
  • improve ventilation into the space
  • provide new furniture fitting for the newly conserved space
  • install a new sound system

Work is also being undertaken to the external walls of the Lady Chapel by our team of Stonemasons. Now that the south elevation has been completed, work can begin on the north and east sides. This will include:

  • major repair work to specific parts of the masonry
  • conservation and restoration of existing stone
  • repointing works

Whilst this work is being undertaken, we will be running regular scaffolding tours. This will enable our visitors to get up close to the building and see for themselves the extraordinary craftsmanship.
