Choral Scholarships

Gloucester Cathedral supports three, or occasionally four, Choral Scholars each year. Alto, Tenor and Bass applications are taken at any time during the year and auditions are usually held in October for entry the following September. Choral Scholarships are offered as either: a gap year between A Levels and a Degree course; or as a Post Grad appointment.

Choral Scholars sing in the Cathedral Choir for six services per week, alongside the Lay Clerks of the choir. Additional services and concerts are frequently held thereby giving scholars a substantial amount of singing experience. The Cathedral grants the Scholars and additional sum for payment of singing tuition.

The Cathedral Music Department try to ensure that Choral Scholars benefit from the wider opportunities that exist here and therefore Choral Scholars are engaged on other duties within the Music Department on a regular basis.

Accommodation is provided, rent free, for the three Choral Scholars in a shared house in College Court, just off College Green.

Choral Scholars currently receive a living allowance, payable in arrears in monthly instalments; there are also fees available for special services, concerts and recordings.

Organ Scholarship

Gloucester Cathedral supports an Organ Scholar each year. Applications are taken at any time during the year and auditions are usually held in October for entry the following September. Choral Scholarships are offered as either: a gap year between A Levels and a Degree course, or as a Post Grad appointment.

The Organ Scholar plays for many of the Cathedral Choir, Cathedral Youth Choir and Junior Choir services, rehearsals and concerts. The Assistant Director of Music provides lessons and advice for the Organ Scholar throughout the year. The Organ Scholar is expected to work alongside the Music Department staff thereby gaining additional experience in the organisation of a Cathedral Music Department.

Accommodation is provided, rent free, for the Organ Scholar in a shared house in Millers Green.

The Organ Scholar currently receives a living allowance, payable in arrears in monthly instalments; there are also fees available for special services, concerts and recordings.
