Lady Chapel Conservation Project

Priceless heritage at risk

Our 15th century Lady Chapel is regarded as one of the greatest treasures of Gloucester Cathedral but has been identified as the most ‘at risk’ part of the building.

Nearing a state of irreparable deterioration, the Lady Chapel restoration project will be a major undertaking for Gloucester Cathedral over the next three years.

The project will form a substantial part of Project Pilgrim. Much of the work will be carried out by our dedicated team of stonemasons and will include:

  • Restoration of the damaged interior and exterior stonework
  • Cleaning of the interior stonework
  • Conservation of surviving Medieval polychrome
  • Extensive conservation of the stained glass
  • Installation of protective glazing to the Great East Window
  • Other work will also include:
  • Installation of a new heating system
  • Providing disabled access
  • Relighting of the space

The project is also being supported by:
