Further information

The following links may be useful to anyone with an interest in researching the history of St Peter’s Abbey, the Cathedral, or allied subjects. The list will be added to and suggestions for inclusion are welcomed.

Gloucestershire Archives

The estate records of the Dean and Chapter are deposited with Gloucestershire Archives whose collections hold much other material relating to the Cathedral. Gloucestershire Archives are also the Diocesan Record Office and place of deposit for Gloucestershire parish records including parish registers.

Bristol and Gloucestershire Archaeological Society (BGAS)

The published Transactions of the Bristol and Gloucestershire Archaeological Society contain many articles relating to St Peter’s Abbey and to the Cathedral. Volumes 1 to 126 (1876-2008) are fully and freely available on their website along with a General Index (1876-2002) and the Contents Pages (1876-2011). The site also hosts a number of Gloucester Cathedral Archaeological Reports 1997-2007.

Worcestershire Archives Service

The Diocese of Gloucester was created in 1541. Before that Gloucestershire formed part of the Diocese of Worcester whose records are deposited with the Worcestershire Archives Services.

The Historia et Cartularum Monasterii Sancti Petri Gloucestriae

W . H. Hart’s three volume edition of the Abbey’s Historia and the cartulary now in the National Archives (TNA ref.: C 150/1). Published 1863-67 as part of the Rolls Series. It is available online here, courtesy of the Bodleian Library, Oxford.

The Victoria County History of Gloucestershire

All published volumes of the Gloucestershire VCH are available online here, courtesy of the British History Online project based at the Institute of Historical Research, London.

Fasti Ecclesiae Anglicanae 1541-1857: Volume 8, Bristol, Gloucester, Oxford and Peterborough Dioceses

This reference work traces the history of bishops and higher clergy in the various dioceses of the Church of England. It is available online here, again courtesy of the British History Online project.

Hereford Cathedral Library and Archives

A number of St Peter’s Abbey deeds are held by Hereford Cathedral Archives having been taken there at some time after the Dissolution.
