Magnificent masons complete Foundation Degree

Trainees qualify with merit

Gloucester Cathedral is delighted to announce that two of its talented trainee stonmasons have completed their Cathedral Workshop Fellowship Foundation Degrees with merit.

At Gloucester Cathedral we are extremely proud of the training offered to our stonemasons and James and Paul are part of a talented team which helps to maintain the building's fabric.

The Cathedral Workshop Fellowship Foundation Degree Scheme gives our masons the chance to obtain an academic qualification based on both the theory and practice of their skills. Gloucester Cathedral has been involved since the very beginning nine years ago and students from other cathedrals now come to Gloucester to attend the University of Gloucestershire for their course modules. Trainees are able to undertake training at other cathedrals in the fellowship giving them experience of other types of stone and other cathedrals.

Since arriving as trainees, James and Paul have progressed steadily in all areas of stonemasonry, including cutting and carving stones, learning conservation techniques, and setting out complex geometry.

Master Mason, Pascal Mychalysin said:

"Paul and James have both achieved wonderful results and always give their best. James is now a mentor for one of our new trainees who is just starting the degree course and is well on his way to becoming our youngest senior mason."

James was also Highly Commended in the Duke of Gloucester Award for Excellence in Stonemasonry at a presentation which took place at St Bartholomew the Great in the City of London on Wednesday 4 October
